What Does “Shilajit” Mean? The Name and Its Origin

The Classical Texts: Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita

The two most important sources of classical Ayurvedic literature mention shilajit explicitly:

The level of detail in the old texts is remarkable: they distinguish between source locations, colours and qualities and give precise instructions for preparation – an early form of “quality thinking”, long before laboratories existed.

The Four Traditional Types of Shilajit

The classical literature divides shilajit into four types according to its outward appearance, metaphorically assigned to four metals:

  1. Sauvarna – the “golden” type with a reddish shimmer
  2. Rajata – the “silver”, lighter type
  3. Tamra – the “copper” type with a bluish sheen
  4. Lauha – the “iron-bearing”, black-brown type; tradition regarded it as the most valuable, and it corresponds most closely to the dark resin traded today

Spread Beyond India: The Silk Road and the Mumijo Tradition

The history of the mountain resin does not end at the borders of the Indian subcontinent. Via the trade routes of Central Asia, knowledge of the black substance reached the Persian and Arab world, where medieval scholars – including authors in the circle of Avicenna – described similar substances under the term Mumiya. In the Altai, Pamir and Caucasus, an independent folk tradition developed around the mumijo collected there. In the 20th century, Soviet research took up the subject and systematically documented deposits and customs of use – a parallel history to the Ayurvedic tradition, which to this day explains why the same natural product is sold in Europe under two names. Shodhana: The Traditional Purification

Raw shilajit is a mixture of resin, rock and impurities. The Ayurvedic tradition developed its own preparation procedure for this, called Shodhana: the raw material is dissolved in water or herbal decoctions, filtered, decanted and gently thickened – sometimes over many cycles. The basic principle – dissolve, filter, thicken – is astonishingly similar to the core of modern processing. How the Old Texts Checked Quality

The tradition's approach to the question of authenticity feels remarkably modern. Even the classical literature knew the problem of inferior or adulterated goods and described simple test procedures: good shilajit should dissolve in water without residue, drawing characteristic streaks as it does so, soften rather than burn when heated, and have an unmistakably bitter, earthy-smoky taste. The difference from back then: today, home tests only replace the pre-selection. What no eye and no tongue can check – heavy metals, microbiology, acid profile – belongs in an accredited laboratory. The tradition asked the right questions; reliable answers only come from modern analysis.

Rasayana: What the Term Means – and What It Does Not

In the classical texts, shilajit is listed as a Rasayana. This is how Ayurvedic teaching designated a category of its own for substances and procedures to which it traditionally ascribed generally strengthening, “rejuvenating” properties. The modern classification is important: from a legal and scientific point of view, these traditional attributions are not equivalent to authorised health claims. No health claims are authorised for shilajit in the EU (Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006) – unlike registered traditional herbal medicinal products, food supplements have no “traditionally used for” exemption. A long tradition documents spread and appreciation, but not effect.

Shilajit is part of classical formulations there and is also marketed as a modern export product. Important for the European perspective: what counts as a traditional medicine in India is legally a food in the EU – specifically a food supplement, subject to the strict rules of the Health Claims Regulation. From Tradition to Modern Research

Since the 1980s, research has been investigating what the mountain resin contains chemically: mainly fulvic and humic acids as well as a broad mineral profile.
