Himalayan Shilajit: The Classical Origin
The Himalayas are the origin described in Ayurvedic literature. It is typically collected at altitudes between about 3,000 and 5,000 metres, including in Nepal, India (Ladakh, Kumaon) and Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan). Origin stories with altitude figures (“from 5,000 m altitude”) are typical marketing – such claims are hardly verifiable for consumers. Characteristic of Himalayan material is the dark, viscous to solid resin with an intensely bitter, earthy profile.

Consistency, Colour, Taste: Can You Tell the Difference?
In the finished product, regional differences are hard for laypeople to identify reliably. Purified resin from both regions is dark brown to black, glossy, viscous at room temperature and tastes intensely bitter and earthy. Consistency and appearance depend more on processing, residual moisture and storage temperature than on the mountain range: the same resin is hard as glass in winter and soft as honey in summer. Even the often-cited “smokier” or “milder” taste of individual origins varies from batch to batch. Anyone who tells you they can reliably identify the region by taste is selling a story – batches can only be distinguished robustly in the laboratory, via mineral profile and acid values.
Counterfeiting Risk and Market Reality
One aspect that often gets lost in the origin debate: on the European market, “Himalaya” is above all a marketing word. Because the region carries the higher prestige and the higher price, stretched or adulterated cheap products also like to dress themselves up with Himalaya labels and altitude records. Altai material, by contrast, is traditionally traded more soberly as mumijo – often via pharmacies and retailers with Eastern European roots. Only two things can be checked – the behaviour of the resin itself (solubility, consistency, residues) and the batch-specific laboratory analysis. What Does Science Say About Regional Differences?
Analyses of shilajit samples from different locations show one thing above all: large variation. The content of fulvic and humic acids, the mineral profile and possible contaminants differ from deposit to deposit – even within the same region. Review papers (such as Agarwal et al., 2007) describe shilajit from several countries without ranking any origin as superior. Studies on regional samples are predominantly preclinical – not transferable to humans. There is no robust evidence that Himalayan shilajit is fundamentally superior to Altai mumijo (or vice versa).
Price and Availability in Europe
The two origins also show different faces in the market. Altai material traditionally reaches Germany and neighbouring countries via two routes: as mumijo tablets in pharmacies (typically around €14–20 per pack) and as inexpensive resin from retailers with Eastern European roots, sometimes from about €0.40 per gram. The question of origin is interesting, but it does not answer the questions that really matter to you as a buyer:
- Was the raw resin thoroughly purified? Raw material contains rock and impurities.
- Is there a certificate of analysis (COA) for each batch? With batch number, heavy-metal values (lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium) and microbiological testing.
- Is the fulvic acid content stated together with the measurement method? Percentages without a stated method are not comparable.
