What is fulvic acid? The chemistry behind it
Fulvic acids belong to the humic substances – the class of compounds that forms during the microbial breakdown of organic material and occurs in soils, peat, bodies of water and, indeed, in shilajit. Chemically, it is not a single defined substance but a mixture of structurally similar organic acids. Three properties are characteristic:
- Low molecular weight: Fulvic acids are the smallest members of the humic substances.
- Water solubility across the entire pH range: Unlike humic acids, they dissolve in acidic as well as alkaline solutions – one of the reasons purified shilajit dissolves in water without residue.
- Many functional groups: Carboxyl and hydroxyl groups make fulvic acids chemically reactive – they can bind minerals in complexes. This property has long been described in soil science.

How does fulvic acid form in shilajit?
Fulvic acids form during humification: microorganisms decompose plant material, and over decades humic substances arise from the breakdown products. In the rock crevices of high mountain ranges, this process takes place under special conditions – pressure, temperature swings, mineral-rich rock. Why the fulvic acid content is the most important quality marker
When suppliers state their fulvic acid content (e.g. "standardised to 76–83%"), that is not a claim of effect but an analytical figure – and it is valuable precisely as such. Three reasons:
- Purity indicator: Raw shilajit contains rock residues, sand and roughage. The more carefully it has been purified, the higher the proportion of the soluble humic substance fraction – a low value can point to poorly purified or diluted material.
- Comparability: The content makes batches and products objectively comparable – unlike marketing terms such as "premium" or "authentic".
- Consistency: A supplier that analyses every batch demonstrates that quality does not fluctuate from delivery to delivery.

Isolated fulvic acid: an unauthorised novel food in the EU
A point many shops keep quiet about: according to the EU Novel Food Catalogue, fulvic acid as an isolated or enriched substance counts as a novel food – and is not authorised. Products that advertise isolated fulvic acid as an ingredient ("fulvic acid supplement") are not marketable in the EU. The situation is different for mumijo/shilajit: as a food supplement it is, according to the EU Commission's novel food consultation (2020), not novel – including its naturally contained fulvic acids. The difference, then, is: natural component of the whole natural product (permissible) versus isolated single substance (not authorised).
For you as a buyer, this means: reputable suppliers treat fulvic acid as an analytical and quality figure for their shilajit – not as an advertised active ingredient. Statements such as "fulvic acid improves nutrient absorption" are not permitted in the EU: no authorised health claim exists for fulvic acid.
How is the content measured – and why do the figures vary so widely?
Fulvic acid figures from 2% to over 80% circulate on the market – which is down less to the products than to the measurement methods. There is no single mandatory procedure; gravimetric, spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods yield differently high values for the same sample. Some suppliers exploit this and advertise with values from whichever method is most "favourable". Here is what to look for:
- Is the measurement method named in the certificate of analysis?
- Does the value come from an independent laboratory and does it refer to the specific batch?
- Is the value plausible? Extreme values without a stated method are a warning sign.

The state of research – soberly put in context
Fulvic acids are studied scientifically above all in soil and environmental chemistry; there, their role as complexing agents for minerals is well described. On fulvic acids in the human organism, mostly preclinical work exists – cell and animal models whose results are not transferable to humans. Robust human studies on isolated fulvic acid are largely lacking, and the evidence base is not sufficient for authorised health claims.
