The short version: from plant material to mountain resin

Shilajit is not a tree resin and not a mineral in the strict sense, but a so-called biogenic substance: a mixture of decomposed organic material and mineral components of the surrounding rock. Science classifies shilajit as a humic-substance-rich exudate – a mass that seeps out of rock layers and consists largely of humification products. Interestingly, despite centuries of use, the exact formation process has still not been conclusively explained. Research relies on geochemical analyses of the end product and on observations at the collection sites – a complete "live record" of the formation naturally does not exist, because the process takes decades to centuries.

Step by step: how shilajit forms

  1. Deposition of plant material: Plant remains, mosses, lichens and microorganisms accumulate over long periods in rock crevices, caves and rock layers of the high mountains.
  2. Microbial decomposition: Bacteria and fungi break down the organic material. This produces intermediate products that continue to react.
  3. Humification: From the breakdown products, humic substances form – above all fulvic acids and humic acids, which later make up the bulk of the resin.
  4. Pressure, temperature and time: Rock pressure, freeze-thaw cycles and intense UV radiation in the high mountains compact the mass and shape its viscous consistency. Minerals from the surrounding rock are incorporated.
  5. Seeping out of the rock: In hot summer months, the mass softens and pushes through rock crevices to the surface – as a dark, glossy exudate that collectors remove by hand at high altitude.

What role do plants and microorganisms play?

Which plant species supply the source material has long been discussed in the literature. Species mentioned include Euphorbia royleana and Trifolium repens (white clover), as well as mosses, lichens and liverworts from around the collection sites. There is probably no single source plant: depending on the region, different plant communities are likely involved – one of the reasons why batches from different regions differ in composition.

The microbial component is just as important: without bacteria and fungi there would be no humification. Incidentally, the same class of substances – humic substances – also forms in ordinary soils and in peat; shilajit is, in a sense, a highly compacted, mineral-enriched high-mountain variant of this universal natural process.

Why only in high mountains?

Shilajit collection sites typically lie at 1,000 to over 5,000 metres altitude. That is no coincidence, because the conditions there favour the process in several ways:

  • Extreme temperature swings between day and night and between summer and winter accelerate the physical processing of the material and the summer seepage from the rock.
  • Little human influence: The deposits remain undisturbed for decades.
  • Geology: Fissured rock formations provide cavities in which organic material can collect and mature under pressure.
  • Young fold mountains such as the Himalayas contain sedimentary layers in which organic material became trapped.

How long does formation take?

There is no exact figure – credible estimates range from several decades to centuries. What is certain: shilajit is not a quickly renewable resource. The amounts that can be collected at any one site are limited, and opening up new sites is laborious and sometimes dangerous. That explains part of the price of genuine, purified resin – and why extremely cheap products should make you sceptical.

What the formation process reveals about quality

  • Natural variation: Because source material, rock and climate vary, fulvic acid content and mineral profile fluctuate from batch to batch. Reputable suppliers therefore analyse each batch individually.
