
What Is Shilajit? The Mountain Resin from the Himalayas, Simply Explained
In brief: Shilajit is a natural, resin-like substance that forms over centuries in high mountain regions such as the Himalayas and the Altai. It consists mainly of organic matter – above all fulvic and humic acids – along with minerals and trace elements. In Russia and Central Asia, the same substance is known as mumijo. Shilajit is traditionally taken as a food supplement in resin form or as tablets.
Where does the name come from?
The word "shilajit" comes from Sanskrit and is often translated as "conqueror of rocks" or "destroyer of weakness" – a designation from centuries-old Ayurvedic literature, in which the substance is described as a rasayana (rejuvenative). Important context: these are traditional, cultural-historical designations – not scientifically proven or legally authorised health claims.
How does shilajit form?
Shilajit forms over very long periods of time – the common explanation: plant material and microorganisms become trapped in rock layers and, under pressure, temperature and microbial activity, are transformed over centuries into a dense, tar-like mass. During the summer months, this mass seeps out of rock crevices at altitudes between roughly 1,000 and 5,000 metres, where it is traditionally harvested by hand.
The best-known regions of origin are:
- Himalayas (India, Nepal, Pakistan) – the classic shilajit origin of the Ayurvedic tradition
- Altai Mountains (Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia) – the classic mumijo origin of the Russian-Central Asian tradition
- plus the Caucasus, Pamir and other high mountain ranges
Shilajit and mumijo: two names, one substance

What is in shilajit?
Purified shilajit resin typically consists of 60–80% organic matter. The most important components:

Raw shilajit straight from the rock contains rock debris, sand and – depending on the region – measurable amounts of heavy metals such as lead or arsenic. That is why it is traditionally filtered and purified before sale. What forms does shilajit come in?
The two most important forms:
- Resin: the most original form – viscous to firm, with a characteristically bitter, earthy taste. The dose is a rice-grain- to pea-sized amount (approx. 0.33 g) that dissolves under the tongue or is stirred into lukewarm water.
- Tablets: pressed, standardised shilajit – precisely dosed (e.g. 200 mg per tablet) and taste-neutral. The practical choice for on the go, or for anyone who finds the taste of the resin too intense.
